How fast can you write a blog post? Quick and lickety-split? Slow as molasses in January?
If I’m being honest, I personally feel I’m slow as shit when it comes to all things creative. I have no problem with beginning — it’s easy to make head-way on a project. But, the last 25% is a flat out grind for me.
A blog post might take days. A book can take months. A single piece of art, or music, could remain a work-in-process for years.
Recently, I’ve been reframing my work-mindset with a simple switch. It helps me jump into blog writing; it allows me knock out pieces quicker and more consistently.
Instead of saying “I don’t have enough time” start saying “I have SOME time.”
When we want to write, our brains like to anticipate certain environmental factors.
In my case, it’s typically the following: coffee, propped up at a desk, iPad ready to go, with ample time ahead of me.
Throughout the past year, I’ve found this “conditional writing” to be a huge pitfall in my writing output.
I talk myself out of it. I say things like “I can’t focus here” or “I only have 10 minutes.” Honestly, this is just lazy thinking.
The point is, you can do something in 10 minutes!
You’ll be that much closer to hitting publish and that much closer to forming a positive habit.
Capitalize on the time you’ve got, regardless of the circumstances.
If you’re a newbie at blogging (less than a year of experience), odds are you still need to find that flow and pattern in your productivity.
Learning how to flip that “writer switch” on and off is a big part of the game.
Take advantage of every window of opportunity.
No more “now is not the time.” Start saying “let’s see what I can accomplish.”
