Challenge Update: Winning? Losing?

I’ve been writing on Medium for two weeks straight now. Here’s a midway synopsis.

I’m welcoming Day 15, which means I’m smack dab in the middle of my 30 Day Writing Challenge. I’ve posted every single day for over two weeks now and I must say, it feels pretty damn good.

Although writing and publishing something daily may seem like a small task, its legitimacy builds up overtime. It’s brought real change to my schedule and my overall approach to writing has changed significantly.

No kidding.

In the beginning

Initially, this challenge felt exactly how it sounded… like a challenge! The first week was all about breaking tension; breaking my mental and emotional strains. At times, I didn’t “feel like it.” I had to push through.

By declaring this 4-week-long dare, I vowed to start a new habit: write everyday. Anytime you initiate a new habit or routine, it’s going to cause friction at first. However, you can’t sweat it because that friction is going to cause change — the kind of change you are after in the first place!

This challenge reinforces my determination.

So, how do I sum up week one? Rough, but absolutely necessary. The first week enabled me to form a slight amount of muscle memory, which is all it takes to get going.

It set me up for the rest of the challenge.

The ball’s rolling

After a few strenuous days, everything seemed to ease up. I got into a groove and started to see some encouraging results. I love numbers, so allow me to break out some stats:

On day 1, I averaged about 4 views per post. I had only 7 followers. My most successful post had 20 views. Responses? Nonexistent.

Fast forward a bit and these numbers take an upswing.

Now, my posts are averaging about 23 views (still mediocre, but better). I have more than 100 followers and I finally got a post over 100 views. Yes, these numbers virtually mean nothing. I still ain’t shit.

BUT, this does mean my time and effort is paying off, in some fashion. It’s a meager victory, but a victory nonetheless.

It’s working

Believe it or not, I am getting better as a writer, too (or feels like it). It’s no question I’ve become more productive. In the literal sense, I am producing more than I was before which is always beneficial. Writing is like any other skill, the more you practice, the better.

Furthermore, it’s become clear that quantity and volume are king when it comes to content writing. Yes, quality matters and always will. But, I’ve realized the importance of frequency. People will always prefer something fresh.

Part of the struggle for me now is finding the perfect balance of output and depth.

Can’t forget

Another really great part about this challenge is the boost in interaction. I enjoy connecting with other perspectives and trading information with fellow members. It’s another opportunity. I love the exchange of ideas.

Medium is a better experience when you share it with others.

Carry on

The fact I haven’t quit is nothing to boast about, but I’m glad I haven’t quit. Any long-term process or stretched out challenge will test your perseverance.

Hangin’ in there holds merit, too.

I’m pleased with the progress I’ve established; I’m happy where I’m at on Day 15. There’s still another half of all this. More to gain up ahead!
