Writing Is Dead & We Have Killed It

What’s up Medium? Long time, no write. Or read. Or whatever.

I don’t think I’ve used Medium (in an honest sense) in 2 years.

In 2023, I published a bunch of journal entries. In 2024, I didn’t even think about Medium. Here’s why.

Writing is Dead

Was it Nietzsche who said “writing is dead?” Wait, no, he said “God is dead.”

Anyways, I think writing is dead for several reasons.

First off, bandwidth restrictions. Think about this as “a limit placed on the amount of data that can be transmitted within a given period.”

The process of converting abstract thoughts into written words is often slow, especially compared to speaking. This becomes even more challenging when verbal fluency is low or sentence structure is weak.

In my case, I notice I spend way too much time questioning, editing, and rethinking (rewriting) as I’m writing.

This excessive back-and-forth leaves no trace of my original thoughts in the final product; text is simply published without the nuance of thinking.

Some may say this is an advantage of writing. Yes, writing’s a great way to reconfigure thoughts after they’ve spewed out of your brain.

I write to think and organize my ideas. I like psychology, philosophy, and self-improvement—em dashes are my specialty. Not an expert.*
